Burning after ointments

Hi This has probably been discussed here before but I've only recently had an outbreak so I'm new to all this. I have used E45 and another ointment (separately) and both cause a quite intense burning and itching feeling. After a while (30 mins) it calms down and feels quite cool. Is this normal? Is it something I should continue with? Any other thoughts on what I should do? Trying to get out in the sun but still a little chilly to be out for long. Any help gratefully received. Thanks
