I've suffered from p for ten years now since a teenager. I have tried several treatments from Sebco, to dovobet to epaderm just to name a few. They all stop working after a few months. I have been to specialists, had people stare at me and make comments especially as a teenager. Recently just been to a new doctors where I live, the doctor didn't even look at my skin and prescribed betnovate. I've seen fellow sufferers say it reacted badly to them. Please help with what ever remedies have worked. I've just been told to be persistent and I have been. But I'm fed up! The doctor also told me what P is and I almost laughed! It gets me pretty down and angry.

Unhelpful gps - don't you just love 'em!
Seriously, as gps they can't be experts but their lack of knowledge about skin conditions generally unfortunately comes down to the fact they receive very little to no training about them. Doesn't help you though.
First find an emollient that works for you to at least keep it as smooth as possible. Best to apply it in a downwards motion in one direction. Try not to rub it in vigorously as that can make it worse.
Second, if you smoke, try and cut down or , even better, give up. Difficult, I know, especially when feeling so frustrated. Same with alcohol. Keeping it to a minimum helps calm psoriasis down.
After that, if topical creams and treatments aren't helping keep it at a manageable level push for another hospital referral. Phototherapy might help, if you have he time to do it, or else it's looking to the drugs such as ciclosporin or methotrexate. You wouldn't automatically be offered them; it does depend on how extensive the psoriasis is and the impact it's having.
It's probably a long shot but does the gp or hospital have a psychologist you could be referred to? Developing a chronic condition as a teenager is hard, just as we're learning who we are. You've had it ten years and tried plenty of treatments. From your post it sounds as if talking it through with a professional might help. Being told to be persistent is one of the more unhelpful comments drs make.
My first dr, luckily a brilliant man, liked angry patients. They have energy. I know it's tiring and you're fed up but use your anger to take the bull by the horns. Politely suggest to the dr what you would like (hospital, drugs, psychologist) and put the ball firmly in their court. If they're going to say no, get them to explain why. You have a long term health condition and should expect as good a health service as any one else.
Go for it and good luck!
