Hi. I am 57 and have had psoriasis since I was a child but only been diagnosed with Psa 6 years ago. I have been having flare ups which are quite painful and unmanageable without strong pain medication for the past couple of years but it has been bearable. I keep being recommended by the rheumatologist to start methotrexate but I keep getting scarred by the side effects and the toll it takes on your immune system especially as I am healthy otherwise. Looking for similar experiences and really unsure if to choose starting treatment which is quite invasive. Any advice would help
Hi Manu, I felt much as you do when it was first suggested I start methotrexate at a similar age to yourself. First of all, please don't neglect to consider the effects of long term high level painkillers on your body, combined with the fact that they actually resolve nothing. After speaking to my rheumatologist I decided to give the methotrexate a go and I'm very glad I did. It broke the back of a lot of the symptoms I had been experiencing and, as I took the meds at bedtime and took folic acid every day apart from during the 24 hour period post meds I had no side effects. I was on methotrexate for 5 years, three of them with the addition of a biologic, further lowering my immune response in order to deal with my disease. During that time I had no colds and only got covid last December. Before you start it's wise to get immunisations upto date including pneumonia of you've not had it. Use hand sanitizer often and I use an anti viral nasal spray regularly if going out and about but otherwise, enjoy your life! Best wishes, Rose

Hello manu
Has posted above i agree but what works for you is a minefield, people with psoriasis have a greater resistance to other bugs virus ect,new research in the u.s.a. has confirmed this, your immune system goes into overdrive causing all sorts of side affects,ie skin regeneration ect,has rose says if you go down the route of m.e.ths take prevention measures !
Good luck
